While attending the Graduation Parade of the United States Military Academy Class of 2019 (Tom’s class) I spotted an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair, who’s hat was embroidered with the USMA crest and the year 1944. I was compelled to speak with him and thank him for his service to our country. This gentleman is Brigadier General (Retired) Jack M Pollin. He is a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. I introduced my wife and daughters, and He and his son John, who is also a veteran, seemed as honored to meet us as we were to meet them, which was very humbling. They knew of Tom’s heroic story, and were very gracious in their praise of his actions and of our continued support and involvement at West Point.
BG Pollin insisted on getting up from his wheelchair and standing for the attached photo. He is a very tough and proud man. Two days later, I witnessed a similar incident while attending Mass at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Chapel at West Point. BG Pollin was seated in one of the front pews, and over CH. COL Pawlikowski’s offer, insisted on getting up and coming up the aisle for Holy Communion, instead of receiving it while seated in his pew. I think that says a lot about him.
